MG # 8359: UNITY WHEELCHAIRS

Rotary Club Ferney -Voltaire, France, initiated the project for the supply of Wheelchairs for a children hospital in Madagascar in late 1997. The Club approached ITC, a Geneva based UN agency, to identify a suitable supplier through one of its members. ITC recommended Sohrab, a Lahore - Pakistan based company, producer of Unity, Low cost quality wheelchair based on design provided by international consultants of ITC.
Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison acted as a liaison between the Rotary Clubs in France and Madagascar and Sohrab. Due to dedication of a team of committed Rotarians of Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison and thanks to the excellent cooperation extended by Sohrab, the project became a brilliant success. Contribution to the project from the Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison, amounting to some 100 work/hours (US$ 3,000), approximately 20 % of the cost of 145 wheelchairs, included the following components:

· Prompt communication with Rotary Club Fernery - Voltaire, France and Rotary Club in Madagascar.
· Preparation of a detailed production/ supply schedule.
· Pre - shipment inspection of the quality and packaging of the wheelchairs.

Other agencies involved in the project were WHO, The Wheelchair Foundation, The Red Crescent and The Red Cross. Rotary Club of Lahore Garrison offers to provide the Unity Wheelchairs to other Rotary Clubs wishing to help the disabled poor in other parts of the world.
